Ambientada en los años sesenta y setenta, narra La historia de del ascenso de un trío de mujeres: Effie, Deena y Lorrell, que han formado un grupo prometedor llamado The Dreamettes. El ambicioso agente Curtis Taylor (Jamie Foxx) las descubre durante un concurso musical, y les ofrece la oportunidad de su vida: hacer los coros para el famosísimo James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy).
